Ariel
Rodo's Ariel talks about the same concept as Jose Marti in that there is a distinction between the United States and Latin American countries. Both writers use language and literary elements to either elaborate on their viewpoints directly or to mask it and leave it to the reader's interpretation. Rodo uses Ariel to represent young Latin American countries and states that they should strive to be the opposite in morals as the United States. America was seen as a victory story of an oppressed colony gaining independence from its colonizers, but it has turned into a cautionary tale of what happens to a country when thirst for power and expansion overtakes the spirit of the people. Rodo wants to preserve the spirit of Latin America and warns its inhabitants that imitation of the Unites States will be their downfall. I feel like the imitation idea worked for the fact the United States and Latin America are different entities. The capitalism of America molded the way the morals of America are executed and therefore if a nation is rising somewhere else and they model themselves after the US, then they are not getting the ideals that are the foundation of our country, but simply the politics that are interpreted by their leaders.
