Storni

Alfonsina Stornio wrote provocative, feminist, unique poetry that upset the norms of the current eras of literature of her time. Her work refused to be placed into the either the category of modernism or avant-garde, but since her writing style was not duplicated and romanticized it did not produce another era of poetry. Despite her stand alone verses, her works were forced to take on labels that did not truly fit. In Hombre Pequenito, the canary represents the freedom of women or the freedom of anyone that is having their liberties oppressed without a clear as to why. The cage is the male dominated society that refuses to allow women to express themselves freely. The cage is the double standard that dictates what men can do openly with praise, but is condemned when done by a female. It could be about the loss of women’s freedom when they get married because not only does society tell them what to do, but their husband also regulated them. In Peso Ancestral, the yo is all the pain of the female race that society tells them to hide. The yo is all the women from the past that are talking to the women of the future. The tu is the world that forces them to stop crying by calling them weak and poor to justify the superiority of men. The tear is poison because it destroys whomever is crying. It destroys their image of power, strength, and sensibility. Tears are used against people because emotions warrant weakness and it is easier to prove someone weak that to proves someone strong.
